Meet Chris Cobb from Top Prospect Goaltending

A veteran collegiate goaltending coach, Coach Chris Cobb is also a goaltending development coach with USA Hockey, works with goalies during USA Hockey player development camps and owns goaltending development company Top Prospects Goaltending (TPG) USA, which provides goalie coaching through camps and private lessons throughout North America. Coach Cobb’s business partner who owns TPG Canada is Brad Kirkwood who just won a goal medal as the Goalie Coach for the Canadian Women’s Olympic team.

Coach Cobb started mentoring Hamilton College's men's and women's ice hockey goalies during the 2019-2020 season, helping the Continental men tie for ninth in NCAA Division III in scoring defense in 2019-20, when one of his goalies was sixth in the nation in goals-against average. At Division I Colgate University that same school year, Cobb worked with a women's goalie who tied for sixth in the nation in shutouts while breaking the program record for season shutouts and career GAA.

Coach Cobb has spent four additional seasons with Division I women's teams, at Dartmouth College (2016-17 to 2018-19) and Union (N.Y.) College (2015-16). He worked with the netminders for three years at Williams College (2012-13 to 2014-15), helping the Ephs win the NESCAC championship and make the NCAA Division III Tournament in 2013-14, before tutoring a goalie who was among the top 10 nationally in GAA, save percentage and shutouts.

Coach Cobb was head coach of the University of Massachusetts' American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) women's squad for five years (2006-07 to 2011-12), leading the Minutemen to a 68-48-13 mark. Massachusetts made three Eastern Collegiate Women's Hockey League (ECWHL) Championship title game appearances, winning one crown while qualifying for two ACHA Final Fours. Cobb coached one national player of the year during his tenure.

At the same time, Coach Cobb was the goalie coach for Amherst College's women's team for three years (2009-10 to 2011-12). The Mammoths won the 2009-10 NCAA Division III Tournament, tying for first nationally in scoring defense while making another NCAA appearance two years later when they took second in Division III in scoring defense. Amherst boasted two goalies who finished among the top three nationally in GAA in 2011-12, while one was second in save percentage and tied for third in shutouts.

Coach Cobb completed his bachelor's degree in kinesiology from Massachusetts in 2007 and earned a master's degree in coaching education from Ohio University in 2011.

Feedback

"The NAHA Goalie Showcase is a great opportunity to learn from some of the best coaches in North America. The unique camp style also allows you to get to know college coaches who are evaluating you on and off the ice. As a former Division 1 coach, I learned that personality off the ice is just as important as the skills the athlete puts on the ice. Having that extra time in between ice sessions was beneficial for the coaches to get to know their potential athlete. During practices, the goalies are learning every aspect of the game from movement, tracking pucks, recovery, and reading plays."
Brianne McLaughlin, 2x Olympian

"The goalie coaches do outstanding work teaching the details of the position that separate the great goalies from the good ones. To see noticeable improvement from start to finish was very impressive - the kids worked hard and had fun improving their game!"
Rob Morgan, Head Coach, LIU Brooklyn
