2006-2007 White Team Schedule & Results

The success of a team can be measured in many ways. As a team, we we were less concerned with outcome and more concerned with performance. There were times we wished the outcome was different, but there were also times when the performance of the team set a standard for how the game should be played at this level. We were very proud of this team, and thank you for all the great memories

SEASON RECAPS:

2/2-2/4 NCCP Jr. Raiders Tournament, Ottawa
NAHA White traveled north of the border this weekend and their first game was against the Mississauga Chiefs. The defensive battle ended in a 1-1 tie. Mississauga started the scoring in the first period and the game remained a 1-0 game in favor of Mississauga until late in the second period. Shannon Coffey netted the Winter-Hawks only goal, assisted by Courtney Hanlon and Chelsea Fillingim. Kelsey Neumann exhibited great poise and positioning throughout the game in net for the Winter Hawks.

The second Game for the Winter Hawks was against the Syracuse Stars. Lauren Dahm, goalie for the Syracuse Stars, made magnificent save after save in a game that was territorially dominated by the Winter-Hawks. Teal Bishop scored the only goal for the Winter-Hawks and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

The Winter-Hawks took the ice for the final round robin game knowing that if the won they would advance and if they tied they would go home. The winter-hawks came out flying and Brooke Ammerman scored the first goal of the game in a scrum in front of the Oakville net-minder. Oakville answered early in the second and the game remained tied until Mary Restuccia was hauled down giving the Winter-Hawks a penalty shot. The shot was taken and stuffed home by Brooke Ammerman. Ammerman added a second goal in the second period and the Winter-Hawks took a 3-1 lead into the third period. Oakville wasn’t finished yet and they scored first in the third period to make the score a tense 3-2 margin. With minutes remaining Hannah Milan danced through the defenders and slid the puck brilliantly through the goalies legs to make the score 4-2 in favor of the Winter-Hawks. Kelsey Neumann played brilliantly making several dashing glove saves in the NAHA victory.

The quarterfinal match-up was the Connecticut Polar Bears. Kelsey Neumann played brilliantly for the Winter-hawks as the Connecticut Polar Bears played half the game on the power play including several 5-3’s. The game ended in a 2-2 tie, the goal scorers for the Winter-Hawks were Shannon Coffey and Mary Restuccia. The Polar Bears were victorious in a shoot out that went to the sixth shooter. Kelsey Neumann was fantastic in net for NAHA stopping several breakaways adding to her solid play on the weekend for NAHA.

1/20 White v Cushing Academy

NAHA White traveled down to Cushing Academy to play a fast skating Cushing team.  NAHA took an early lead when Mary Restuccia received a brilliant pass through the crease from Brooke Ammerman.  Restuccia knocked it home for the first goal of the game.  Cushing responded with two unanswered goals to take a 2-1 lead with under 4 minutes remaining in the game.  With less than 2 minutes remaining Ammerman flipped a pass over the head of Cushing’s defense to a speeding Brittany Skudder.  Skudder took the pass in on a break-away and fired a laser into the upper left corner of the net, knotting the game at 2-2.  In overtime Brooke Ammerman, assisted by Teddy Fortin, netted the game winner with a wrap around goal.  The winning goaltender in net for the Winter-Hawks was Kelsey Neumann.

1/21 White v CT Polar Bears

The next day NAHA squared off against the Connecticut Polar Bears in a matinee game.   Leading the way with two first period goals was Brooke Ammerman and Kasey Boucher also fired a ripping snap shot that found the back of the net in the first giving the Winter-Hawks a 3-0 lead.   Early in the second period Hannah Milan danced through the defense to score a break away goal making the score 4-0.  Ammerman added a goal in the third period to give the Winter-Hawks a 5-0 lead.  Nikki Parks, weathering an early storm,  was the winning goaltender as she posted yet another shut out for the Winter-Hawks.

1/12/07 NAHA White @ St. Laurent College
The White team traveled up to St. Laurent to challenge the Patriots to a mid-winter home and home series. The game was a tight defensive battle and the solid goaltending by sophomore Kelsey Neumann weathered the early storm by the Patriots.  The defense lead the winter-hawks with the only two goals of the game.  Kasey Boucher snapped a blister shot from the left wing to score the first goal of the game, assisted by Mary Restuccia.  Teal Bishop followed up with her own rush that resulted in the final goal of the game in the second period.  The game ended with a 2-0 victory for the winter-hawks.  The girls will have a re-match in Vermont on Sunday January 14.

12/27/06 CT Polar Bear Tournament

White made a great run at the annual Polar Bear tournament, playing some of their finest 'team' hockey early in the tournament before being besieged by the flu. No excuses, Assabet played a very good semifinal game, knocking White out of the tourney.

12/10/06 Northwood School

Lake Placid NY- NAHA White visited Lake Placid to take on the Northwood School on Sunday. The teams played well early with good transition and puck movement and some timely saves by Northwood goalie Krista Tatum. Midway through the first half NAHA got on the board with a power play goal by Mary Restuccia, assisted by Brooke Ammerman and Randi Zukas. This was a beautiful play exactly as practiced last week! Hannah Milan put away a rebound off a Teddy Fortin shot for NAHA less than a minute later with the second assist going to Courtney Hanlon. NAHA's Brittany Skudder's power play goal finished the scoring for the first half, assisted by Chelsea Fillingim. As the period wore on NAHA's quick tempo, puck movement and style of play began to dictate the game characterized by great puck possession.

NAHA got on the board early in the second half when Julie Rising put a shot 5-hole, assisted by Skudder. Courtney Hanlon got NAHA's fifth assisted by Fortin and Shannon Coffey finished a breakaway after splitting the D on a great feed to close the scoring, assisted by Katelyn Kurth and Skudder.

Kelsey Neumann got the shutout for NAHA, stopping 13 Northwood shots.

12/2/06 NAHA vs. Brewster Academy @ Middlebury College

Over the course of  a long season teams don't bring their 'A' game every night, but it's difficult to predict how or when that happens. NAHA found themselves in that predicament in the luxurious confines of Chip Kenyon Arena at Middlebury College on Saturday night. Half way through the game, NAHA had mustered only 2 shots on net, and trailed a hard working, hard skating Brewster Academy 2-0. Good teams find ways to win those kinds of games, and NAHA had to chip away at the Brewster lead in hopes of getting the 'W'. Randi Zukas started the scoring 2/3rds of the way through the middle period when she took a feed from Brooke Ammerman and patiently waited for the Brewster goalie to give her some net to shoot at, and she buried the power play goal. Ammerman took a beautiful feed off a series of give and goes with Mary Restuccia to tie the game at two. NAHA began to elevate their game, in a rare flat game for them, and took the lead off Hannah Westbrook's bomb from the point, assisted on a nice pass from Brittany Skudder. The lead was short-lived, and time wound down with the two teams tied. A sudden death OT ensued, and NAHA began to get their passing game and skating legs going, ending the game on their second breakaway of the OT, as  Ammerman cut across the crease, slipping the wining goal into the Brewster net, sprung on the breakaway by Skudder. The final was 4-3 W for NAHA, in a game and a week where lots of lessons have been learned by the team.

12/1/06 NAHA vs. Cushing Academy

NAHA traveled down to play Cushing on Friday December 1, 2006.  Nikki Parks proved to be an impervious net-minder as she provided the backstop needed for NAHA to jump out to an early lead in the first period.  NAHA scored an early power play goal by Brittany Skudder assisted by Ammerman.  Playing solid defensively and moving the puck well, Mary Restuccia was able to score two goals, one a brilliant unassisted short hand goal to extend NAHA’s lead to 3-0 by the end of the first period.  The scoring resumed in the third period when Ammerman and Restucia combined for a tic-tac-toe play that Ammerman slammed home through the five-hole of Cushing’s goaltender.  Skudder added her second of the night and Hannah Milan danced through the defense to score her first goal of the night in the closing minutes of the game. The final score was 6-0 Winter-Hawks.

11/29 NAHA vs. Northwood School

On November, 29 2006 Northwood traveled to Morrisville, VT to take on NAHA White for a Wednesday matinee game.  Northwood scored first, the only tally of the first half, and jumped out to an early 1-0 lead.  They held onto the lead well into the second half, as NAHA didn’t score until midway through the second half.  Kayla Colang, now scoring frequently, netted a brilliant goal assisted by Skudder and Rising.  The game winning goal was scored by Candace Molle just one minute later, assisted by Brooke Ammerman.  NAHA scored six straight unanswered goals to make the final score 6-1. Goal scorers were Fillingim, Restuccia, Fortin and Ammerman.  Nikki Parks was relieved by Kelsey Neumann due to equipment problems, and Neumann shut down Northwood for the remainder of the game.

Brown Thanksgiving Showcase

NAHA traveled to Brown University this weekend to compete in a round robin showcase against U-19 AAA Belle Tire, U-19 Assabet Valley, U-19 Troy Albany Selects, and U-19 Princeton Tiger Lilies.

The first game of the round robin was against Belle Tire.  The first goal came ten minutes into the game of a great give and go play between Brittany Skudder and Shannon Coffey, Skudder netted her first of the game.  Skudder added two more goals in the first giving her a natural hat trick and the winter-hawks the spark needed to gain momentum.  With a strong individual effort Teal Bishop added an unassisted goal making the score 4-1 at the intermission.  NAHA added two goals early in the second half to making the lead 6-1. Belle Tire, making a mockery of the game of hockey, pulled their goalie with 12 minutes remaining in the game.  The final score was 9-2, NAHA goal scorers were Skudder (hat trick),  Teal Bishop, Mary Restuccia, Hannah Milan, Shannon Coffey, Courtney Hanlon, and Brooke Ammerman.  Nikki Parks shut the door early on Belle Tire allowing the Winter-Hawks to secure the victory.

The second game was against the Princeton Tiger Lilies of NJ.  NAHA running on all cylinders scored 7 goals in the first half.   Goal scorers were Shannon Coffey (X 2), Chelsea Fillingim, Hannah Milan (X 2), Mary Restuccia and Brooke Ammerman. Kayla Colang scored minutes into the second half and Randi Zukas added a booming slap shot from the point to make the final score 9-1

With unparalleled chemistry NAHA dominated play against their third opponent, Troy Albany Selects. Goal Scorers were Teddy Fortin, Brittany Skudder (X 2), Mary Restuccia (X 4), Shannon Coffey, Brooke Ammerman (X 3) and Hannah Milan.  The final score was 12-2.

Treating the final game as the championship game due to the round robin format, NAHA set their sights on sweeping the weekend.  The final game was against Assabet Valley U 19 Major.  Brooke Ammerman opened the scoring six minutes into the game assisted by Shannon Coffey and Mary Restuccia.  Brittany Skudder and Katelyn Kurth added goals in the first period to make the lead 3-1 at the half.  Kayla Colang scored the only goal of the half assisted by Julie Rising and Candace Molle. Nikki Parks played phenomenal as she weathered an early storm to give the winter-hawks the opportunity they needed to win their fourth consecutive game on the weekend. The final score was 4-1 in favor of the Winter-Hawks.

11/12/06 McGill University Martlet Tournament

The McGill Martlet Showdown 2006

November 10th- November 12th

This weekend NAHA found itself once again traveling north across the border to test their skills at the competitive McGill Martlet Tournament in Montreal Quebec. NAHA’s first opponent was College St. Laurent a team native of Quebec. The first goal was netted by Shannon Coffey from a savvy shot pass made by Candace Molle.  Just three minutes into the second period Chelsea Fillingim danced around three defenders and slammed home a gritty goal to put the Hawks up 2-1.  Expanding on their lead Brittany Skudder added a goal late in the second period assisted by Candace Molle and Brooke Ammerman to give the Hawks a 3-1 lead.  The score remained the same as Nikki Parks provided strong goal tending to secure a 3-1 victory in the first game of the tournament. The McGill staff chose game MVP’s at the end of each game.

Game MVP: Chelsea Fillingim

The Winter-Hawks squared off against Hamilton Jr. Hawks from Ontario for the 2nd round robin game. Continuing with her strong performance on the weekend Courtney Hanlon scored the first goal of the game, assisted by Kasey Boucher and Julie Rising.  In the final minutes of the first period Brittany Skudder scored a dazzling goal right after she stepped out of the penalty box.  Hamilton responded with their lone goal in the second period narrowing the margin to one goal.  The game ended in a 2-1 Victory for NAHA as they carried the play territorially through the end of the game. Game MVP: Courtney Hanlon

The Aurora Jr. Panthers from Toronto was NAHA’s third opponent of the round robin.  This was another low scoring game as the Canadian defensive play was a tactic of many of the opponents on the weekend. Brittany Skudder scored two goals and Brooke Ammerman had a goal and an assist in the 3-1 victory.  Heading into the final game of the round robin the Winter-Hawks were the point leaders in their division. Game MVP: Brooke Ammerman

The final round robin game was against the Mississauga Chiefs of Ontario.  The Hawks received outstanding goaltending from Nikki Parks as she stood on her head giving the Hawks an opportunity to win the game. Hannah Milan scored the only goal for the hawks in her first game back from injury.  She danced through four players and slid the puck far side for a skillful goal that made the score 1-1.  Despite the steadfast goaltending the hawks fell short in their final round robin game losing 2-1, only their third loss on the season. Game MVP: Mary Restuccia

NAHA won the round robin and was placed in the finals against Oakville. Incensed by their loss in the final game of the round robin the Hawks stormed the ice and never gave Oakville a chance.  Mary Restuccia opened the scoring for the Hawks on a break away that she stuffed home, assisted by Kayla Colang.  Kayla Colang scored the second goal of the game bringing tears to the eyes of NAHA’s coaching staff, a truly emotional experience for all.  Teddy Fortin scored late in the second to give NAHA a 3-1 lead and the Winter-Hawks never looked back.  In the final minutes of the game Hannah Milan finished a tic-tac-toe play started by Brittany Skudder.   Nikki Parks, back from injury, was the back-stop that provided the momentum for the Winter-Hawks to win their third tournament of the year. For all the MVP's that McGill's staff gave out, we felt the team's MVP was Nikki- one of her brilliant stops can be seen here!! Game MVP: Teal Bishop

Unsung hero of the tournament championship was Brittany Skudder, whose consistent work ethic set the bar for the team-- finished off nicely with this GOAL!!!

10/30/06 Assabet Valley Girl Tournament

NAHA White traveled down to Assabet Valley for their annual Girls Tournament.  NAHA’s first game was against the Assabet Valley U16 team.  Brooke Ammerman opened the scoring just 52 seconds into the game with an outside slap shot that found its way past their net-minder.  With stead fast defence led by Hannah Westbrook and Kasey Boucher accompanied by another strong performance in net by Kelsey Neumann the Winter-Hawks dominated play until the end of the third period.  Assabet scored with five minutes remaining and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

NAHA’s next opponent was NSA.  Courtney Hanlon notched the first goal for the Winter-Hawks eight minutes into the game off a brilliant pass by Candice Molle.  Mary Restuccia and Randi Zukas scored early in the third period after a scoreless second.  With her second assist of the game Julie Rising sent Brittany Skudder a great pass, Skudder then drove the defence wide and buried a booming slap shot over the left shoulder of the NSA goalie. With the help of Katelyn Kurth and Teal Bishop anchoring NAHA’s formidable defence, Kelsey Neumann posted a shut out with a final score of 4-0.

Not feeling satisfied with their level of play the ever rambunctious Winter-Hawks entered the Valley Sports Arena with a quite air of confidence to take on a U19 team from Chelmsford MA.  Julie rising started the scoring early, off a feed from Teddy Fortin.  With supreme puck poise Brooke Ammerman added four straight goals for the Winter-Hawks each in spectacular fashion.  Rounding out the scoring was Mary Restuccia and Brittany Skudder.  Kelsey Neumann posted her second strait shut out in the 7-0 victory.

Gaining momentum the Winter-Hawks squared off against the Assabet valley U19 girls team in the semi-finals.  With dominating power Brittany Skudder flew down  the left wing and using the defence as a screen she sniped the only goal of the game. NAHA’s defence again proved to be too strong for any opposing offence to crack as they helped Kelsey Neumann post her third consecutive shut out propelling Naha into the finals with a 1-0.

The finals of the 2006 Assabet Valley Womens Tournament was a rematch of the first game, Assabet U16 vs. NAHA. Mary Restuccia, adding to her brilliant, dominating play on the weekend, fed Brooke Ammerman a back door pass off a 2 v 2 rush that Ammerman then slammed home. Mary Restuccia added the next two goals of the game as Naha pulled away to a 3-0 lead by the end of the second period.  Courtney Hanlon added the finishing touch on a spectacular top-shelf back hand goal making the score 4-0.  Solid defensive play by Molle, Kurth, Boucher, Westy, Bishop and Zukas helped Kelsey Neumann secure her fourth consecutive shut out in the 4-0 blanking of Assabet.   NAHA playing disciplined, creative hockey won their second consecutive tournament of the year becoming Assabet Valley Tournament Champions for the first time in school history.

10/23/06 Cornwall ONT, 23rd Annual Cornwall Kinsmen Invitational Tournament
NAHA went north of the border this weekend to compete at the Cornwall Invitational. The first match-up of the weekend was against the Nepean Wildcats from Ottawa Ontario. NAHA came out of the gates flying as Kayla Colang notched the first goal of the game off a spectacular pass from Candice Molle. Building momentum the WinterHawks scored six more unanswered goals for a 7-0 shut-out, the net-minder was sophomore Kelsey Neuman. Goal scorers were Randi Zukas, Hannah Milan, Brooke Ammerman, Brittany Skudder, Chelsea Fillingim, and Courtney Hanlon.

The second game of the tournament was against the Sudbury Wolves of Ontario. The first goal of the game came quickly, just four minutes into the first period by Mary Restuccia, assisted by Hannah Milan. On the power play with 2 minutes remaining in the first period Hannah Westbrook passed the puck to Hannah Milan who then made a spectacular back door pass to the streaking Brittany Skudder for an amazing highlight reel goal. That was the final tally of the game, however NAHA carried the play territorially dominating the Sudburry wolves for the remainder of the game. NAHA carried the momentum into the third game of the weekend against the hosts, Cornwall Typhoons. All three goals came in the second period, goal scorers were Julie Rising, Mary Restuccia, and Chelsea Fillingim. With three convincing wins NAHA poised itself for the finals on Sunday.

Carrying themselves with an air of confidence the Winter-Hawks started the scoring with a tally by Skudder. Shortly after Hannah Milan danced through three defenders and slipped the puck short side for the second goal of the game. Brooke Ammerman and Kasey Boucher added to the scoring and the final score of the Game was a 4-1 victory. Kelsey Neuman, playing all four games, allowed only one goal in the tournament.

In the eyes of many who have seen a lot of games, the Friday night gamemay be the best team game every played by a NAHA team. The play was characterized by great speed, puck possesion, tenacious defense and very fast transition. An example of the transition can be seen in this video where Brook Ammerman sent Mary Restuccia away for a great move and a goal.
