NAHA Wins 6th JWHL League Championship

Vancouver BC- The North American Hockey Academy (NAHA) captured it's 6th Junior Women's Hockey League JWHL Playoff Championship in Vancouver BC over the weekend. The JWHL is the most competitive league for high school female hockey players in North America, and is comprised of six teams based in the US and six across Canada.

NAHA went 3-0 in the round robin with wins over the Washington (DC) Pride, Balmoral Hall Blazers (Winnipeg MB) and playoff host Pacific Steelers. That set up a semifinal matchup with Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Wilcox SK), the number one ranked team in the JWHL regular season. The game was very even through the first and most of the second period before NAHA scored a power play goal to go up 2-1, and within minutes an 3rd goal. The Notre Dame Hounds battled back with an early score in the 3rd period, to make it 3-2, and the game eventually ended with that score. The game was marked by a highlight NAHA power play goal that had the arena at the University of British Columbia on its feet, and can be seen at: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MFR4s89-Tag

In the finals NAHA would play Okanagan Hockey Academy (Penticton BC) for the championship, a team that beat NAHA in their two previous encounters this season. Lead by a hat trick from the last cut of this year's USA Olympic Team, Annie Pankowski (Laguna CA), as well as a sizzlingly hot playoff performance from Katherine Murphy- 5 goals, 3 assists, NAHA took home the Championship to Stowe VT with a 6-0 win.

At the JWHL Banquet, NAHA's captain, Toni Ann Miano (Bronx NY) was named the JWHL Defensive Player of the year. Miano will attend Boston College in the fall on a hockey scholarship.
